Cedarcrest Senior Sam Linnerooth named Benton Scholar at Colgate University
Sam Linnerooth
Congratulations to CHS Senior, Sam Linnerooth. Sam has been accepted to Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. Sam chose Colgate after visiting some East Coast schools during his spring break. Sam valued Colgate’s small student population of 2800, its high teacher to student ratio and the fact that it is rated #19 in the nation for Liberal Arts Colleges. Although Sam was offered Honors Programs at many schools, Colgate went above and beyond by naming him a “Benton Scholar”, making him one of 16 students chosen out of the 760 freshman accepted.
The Benton Scholars Program teaches students leadership in a global context. The classes and experiences of student’s participating in this program will ensure they are poised for success in the 21st century. This impressive scholarship was developed as a model for how a liberal arts education can be shaped to prepare students to think, act and create in a world that is increasingly diverse; providing scholars with activities and selected courses that will bring new perspectives to not only their experiences on campus, but throughout their lives. Participants in the Benton Scholars Program are students who have demonstrated the ability to think and lead, and share a passion to have a positive impact on their world.
Sam began his college search over a year ago. He was assisted by Kevin Miller of College Planning Solutions in Bellevue. He appreciated the assistance that CPSI gave him; helping with compiling his application and finding schools that aligned with his interests.
Colgate is the only University to have a partnership with the National Institute of Health in Washington D.C. Sam will have the opportunity to spend a semester during his junior year, living in D.C. and doing research at the institute. Sam explained, “This prospect fits perfectly with my plans, as my long term goal is to go on to medical school and become a doctor.” Sam is very excited to attend Colgate. He shared, “the freshman class is just the right size for me, and the town of Hamilton has a nice “small-town feel.”
Sam’s college applications included his many achievements as a student at Cedarcrest and in his personal life as well. He has been a CHS ASB Officer for the past three years, the Rotary Student of the Month, a Rotary International Exchange Participant, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation (CCFA) honored Hero, CCFA Walk Caption for several years, and a CCFA Camp Leader in training. Sam will be graduating from Cedarcrest this year with a 3.96 GPA and will also be the 2010 Class Salutatorian.
Our Congratulations Sam and his family!
