REF Runs Duvall 5K/10K : Fun Runs in the Sun

Dear Editor,

On June 5, 2010, Riverview Education Foundation hosted the 5th annual Duvall 5K/10K Runs under sunny blue skies. It was a great morning of competition and camaraderie and REF wants to say “thank you!” to Duvall and the surrounding running communities for your participation.  We also want to say “thanks!” to our amazing volunteers : this event was made possible by a dedicated group of course marshals, medical personnel, water station workers, registration volunteers, post-race food coordinators, sweeps, pacers, photographers and finish chute workers.  Without them, there would simply be no race. They do a tremendous job!

Hats off to our wonderful sponsors as well! Please visit them here: http://www.refweb.org/duvallrun_sponsors.htm   We sure are grateful for their help and support – their generosity makes fundraising for health and wellness programming in the Riverview School District a reality. We sincerely appreciate their hands-on community involvement.

So a big thanks to all of you and save the date: we’ll see you at the start line on June 4, 2011!

Wishing you the Best of Times,

Paige Denison, Race Director                           Dean Vergillo, Course Director

Tolt Middle School Teacher Jeff Grassley
Competes in the Boston Marathon with a 2:46.30 Finish!

When 6th Grade Teacher, Jeff Grassley decided to run the Boston Marathon this year, his goal was to finish in 3 hours… he surpassed that goal by nearly a half an hour with a finishing time of 2:45.30!  Congratulations Mr. Grassley!

The staff and students are hailing Jeff quite the celebrity now that he is back in his classroom after his amazing race. This was Jeff’s second marathon, “but it won’t be my last” he shared, “after running by 500,000 people cheering me on…. it definitely makes me want to go back.” He also explained that he has a friend who wants to join him for the “Boston 2012”, after that he says, “we’ll see.”  The races in Chicago and New York are also possibilities for Jeff in the future.

When Jeff was 10 he ran his very first marathon with his dad, and his love for running was born.  He didn’t begin running seriously until he was in 10th grade.  At that time he noticed that the cross country team seemed to be having a lot more fun that he was playing soccer, and after he broke his thumb and wasn’t given much play time from his soccer coach, he decided to join the Cross Country team, and the rest is history he says, “I love it!”

Jeff’s inspiration in running and in life comes from two men; Eric Liddel the Scottish sprinter, because of his faith and competitiveness, and his dad, Brian. Jeff feels blessed to have parents who supported him through his years of schooling and athletics, and are still there to cheer him on now, whether at a road race or in the classroom as a teacher.
