Letters to the Editor

REF Runs Duvall 5K/10K : Fun Runs in the Sun

Dear Editor,

On June 5, 2010, Riverview Education Foundation hosted the 5th annual Duvall 5K/10K Runs under sunny blue skies. It was a great morning of competition and camaraderie and REF wants to say “thank you!” to Duvall and the surrounding running communities for your participation.  We also want to say “thanks!” to our amazing volunteers : this event was made possible by a dedicated group of course marshals, medical personnel, water station workers, registration volunteers, post-race food coordinators, sweeps, pacers, photographers and finish chute workers.  Without them, there would simply be no race. They do a tremendous job!

Hats off to our wonderful sponsors as well! Please visit them here: http://www.refweb.org/duvallrun_sponsors.htm   We sure are grateful for their help and support – their generosity makes fundraising for health and wellness programming in the Riverview School District a reality. We sincerely appreciate their hands-on community involvement.

So a big thanks to all of you and save the date: we’ll see you at the start line on June 4, 2011!

Wishing you the Best of Times,

Paige Denison, Race Director                           Dean Vergillo, Course Director

Dear Riverview Families,

The Riverview School Board approved a four-year supplemental, one-time, levy that would generate an average of $1 million per year in revenue for the August 17, 2010 ballot.

Riverview has already absorbed $1.6 million in cuts in state funding over the past two years and has implemented significant staffing and program reductions.  Current projections reveal that the state legislature may face a $3 billion deficit next year.

It's important to note that Riverview may not see its revenue go up by approximately $1 million, even if voters approve the measure, because federal stimulus dollars, which have been helping to prop up schools, are expected to disappear next year.

Taxpayers would be charged 38 cents per $1,000 of assessed value in the first year.  This means an owner of a $400,000 home would be charged an additional $12.66 per month.  The tax rate would drop to 31 cents during the third year and to 30 cents during the fourth year.

This supplemental levy would help SUSTAIN - not enhance - the district's educational programs, staffing, and textbook adoptions.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration and continuous support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Conrad Robertson, Superintendent
Riverview School District
